I posted this on my StepmomHelp Facebook page today and people seemed to really appreciate the perspective, so I figured I’d just paste it here too. Hope it helps those of you in this type of situation.

  1. Thank you for this post! I know it’s old but I’m having a real tough time with my step son and I really do think he understands what his mom is doing wrong in her life but I think he’s so used to it being explained away or excused by his mom and her late mother that he considers her lifestyle normal and agreeable. I just wish I could make him understand that her lifestyle does not need to be his lifestyle.

    • Hi Tina, you can help him understand without having to specifically mention his mom. I’m sure you have conversations with him and when you hear him saying something about that you can simply talk about how we all have choices to make, we can choose anything we want for ourselves, etc. you can teach him in those ways. It’s. a process and takes time, but you can absolutely give him permission to live his own life and not his mom’s. Sorry if that’s not completely relevant, without the details of your situation I’m just kind of guessing here. 🙂
